What is soap?
Soap is the product of a chemical process called saponification*, which occurs when acids in the form of animal or vegetable fats are combined with an alkali (a solution of sodium hydroxide and water, called lye) and produce a mixture of soap and glycerine. Quite simply, it's a slippery substance that produces bubbles.
Soap-making is an ancient craft. Prehistoric people may have discovered soap when fat and ash met and saponified as they cooked over open pits.
A soap manufactory was uncovered in the ruins at Pompeii. It's hard to believe that as recent as the last century soap had to be labelled as to how to
Some of the famous brand name soaps that you buy today are actually not soap at all. Nowhere on the packages does the word "soap" appear, rather the products are labelled "beauty bars" or "deodorant bars". They are synthetic detergents. These beauty bars also contain chemical components called builders that increase the efficiency of the soap.
Artisan Pure Soaps use only natural ingredients in our soaps - superior oils, butters, herbs, spices and colourings. Our soaps do not contain any harmful chemicals and this way we create a natural product that is far superior to any synthetic chemical blend that is commercially available.
Because our soap making is done purely by hand shape and size do vary and the weight shown on any packing is a minimum weight and in all cases the actual weight will exceed this. If for any reason you find a product that is below the advertised weight please let us know and you will receive an immediate replacement.
We do not craft PRETTY soaps with fancy unnatural colours and shapes but simply pure RUSTIC LOOKING soaps.
How should the soap be stored?
Hand crafted soaps will naturally harden over time, and because there are no preservatives included they will only last a finite time before deterioration sets in, but they should last between 6 months and one year if kept in a cool dark place before use. Ideally use within six months of purchase for the best experience. To keep your soap in the best condition, let it dry our between uses. Keep it in a dish that allows the soap to drain naturally. Handcrafted soap that is kept moist will get soft and will not last as long. We hope your experience of this natural product is a good one and that you will spread the word, thank you.
Using this Soap as Shampoo
It is quite OK to use our hand-crafted soap bars as shampoos, but please bear in mind that everyone’s hair is different and can be affected in different ways. It can take between 1 and 10 washes for your hair to get used to the natural oils, so persevere. An occasional rinse with 60/40 Water and Apple Cider Vinegar may help your hair to adjust.
Who can use these soaps and shampoos?
If you are pregnant, you should not use any of the soaps with essential oils added.
Avoid getting suds from these soaps in your eyes
as they are only really intended for hand and body use - rinse with clear water if you do.
Whilst essential oils add another dimension to my luxury soaps, they can be an irritant to some with sensitive skin. If you are concerned, please request a free sample or check the ingredients list.
